CARDIFF CITY have signed Portsmouth winger Liam Lawrence on loan until the end of the season as Pompey look to reduce their wage bill.
Previously the Rumour mill has linked Lawrence with Cardiff over a number of season, however such a move near materialised.
He is join the Bluebirds as his club Portsmouth implode in the mire of a financial crisis, in administration with ten points deduct and the possibility them going busted within two weeks according to some reports.
Administrator Trevor Birch said: “It’s very tough to lose Liam but the club is in a grave situation and we have to do everything we can to stay afloat.
‘We are receiving a loan fee from Cardiff, who are paying Liam all his wages, so it’s a deal that is going to make a significant difference to us over the coming weeks.
Republic of Ireland international midfielder Lawrence, 30, who was captain that Portsmouth, scoring eight goals (seven coming during in loan spell) made 56 appearances for Pompey since initially signing on loan from Stoke in September 2010 before the move was made permanent the following January.
The loan deal is for the reminder of the season covering the play-off games if needed. I hope that it will not be needed has Cardiff will win automatic promotion so not.
Lawrence said, ‘Despite all the off-the-pitch difficulties I’ve had some fantastic times here, playing for the most amazing set of supporters in the country.
“I’ll miss everyone at Pompey, and just hope that under the leadership of Michael Appleton the boys can pull through and stay in the Championship."
He played in both fixtures against Cardiff this season picking up a yellow card in the home game at the Cardiff City stadium. He could well be incontention for the West Ham on Sunday.
