THERE was a little bit of a rumour last week that Burnley was interested in signing Bluebirds goalkeeper Tom Heaton, 25. Before Christmas another of our Championship rivals were rumoured to be tracking him, Ipswich Town.
I am unsure of the player’s contract details but it won’t stop interest in signing him after his displays for Cardiff. He has been playing a secondary role to David Marshall since signing back in the summer of 2010, expect for the Carling Cup this season. Could he have finish his season Sunday?
Like most fans, I expected him to feature in the earlier rounds before Marshall would take over.
Maybe Heaton would like to facilitate a move to find regular football who knows but will Cardiff boss Malky Mackay step in with a contract extension.
In today’s press talking about the weekend’s home game against West Ham he knows he is likely to be back on the bench.
“Marshy will be back in goal against West Ham, I’m sure.
“That’s generally how it’s been all season and I can’t complain too much because Marshy has been excellent.
“Heart-breaking though it is to miss out in the league I have to look at the bigger picture and play a full part in the squad. I am working day in, day out to try and get into the team and hopefully I’ve shown in the Carling Cup I am ready when needed.
“Now we are focused on West Ham. It is a vital game and we must use it as a springboard to push on in the league.”
Will the Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay stuck with Marshall or break a habit of the season and keep Heaton on the bench? Not wanting to give advice, but I've been saying for a while now (ok since the semi's) that Heaton should be our first choice keeper.
