THERE was talk that Cardiff City striker Rob Earnshaw was heading out to Major League Soccer, but the talk just turn out to be that, just talk. Well another former Cardiff player Eddie Johnson who has an icon status among some Cardiff City something I could never understand as joined Seattle Sounds.
Johnson joined the Bluebirds of Fulham on a season loan back in 2008/2009 playing some 30 odd days, scoring two goals. Of that it was five League starts plus two in the League Cup. He
came off the bench 26 times most for the time in the last minutes of the game. After his return to Fulham, he was again loan out on January 2010 to Greek side Aris Thessalonikion with minimum success. Next, the striker was loan out to Championship Preston in January last year and left in the summer after 16 games with no goals.
He was release by Fulham in the summer and reappeared in Mexico just be for Christmas when Mexico club Puebla from the Primera Division announced that Johnson had signed. Just Days later a press released said he have failed a physical exam and did not complete the deal. Although other reports suggest a clash of opinions between the team's coach and technical director prevented the deal.
In the last 24-hours, it has been announced 27-year-old Johnson as join MLS club Seattle Sounds after they traded Mike Fucito and Lamar Neagle to Montreal.
"Certainly Eddie has been a high-profile player for a number of years in the U.S. and in global football," said Adrian Hanauer, general manager and part owner. "(He's got) a unique skill set and is a type of forward that we don't currently have on our team."
Before the move back to the States he was hoping he could ‘prove’ himself in Europe, but is happy with his new challenge. Sounders’ coach Sigi Schmid has been a long time admired Johnson as a player for almost 10 years, calling the native of Daytona Beach, Fla., an established forward with good pedigree.
"I've always felt he was a very talented player and a player who had a lot of potential and ability," said Schmid, adding that the Johnson/Montero combination is "going to give us a lot of joy by scoring a lot of goals."
According to The Washington Post Johnson will make $100,000 this season and a club option for $150,000 in 2013 within the Sounders cap-constrains.
Johnson said about joining the Sounders
"I'm just hoping I can bring my experience to the team and work hard every day and try to accomplish the goals that the coach has set forth for the team this year. "Whenever's family involved, you want stability. "You don't want to move your kids and wife around anymore."
