City away to Stoke in the FA Cup

The FA Cup comes to life today with the draw for the Third Round and the entry of the big boys of the Championship and the Premier League.

Everyone will want Manchester United none more than FC United of Manchester who are in the draw thanks to a reply. What an incentive to beat Brighton in the replay if that was to happen.

The draw was to be made by Rock legends Serge Pizzorno of Kasabian home teams while doing the away clubs Noel Gallgher ex-Oasis.

It was a long wait for Cardiff to be plucked out but during the wait all the big names were out, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United. With Cardiff still in the pot there were only two Premiership clubs left, Tottenham or Stoke must fans would favour a trip to london or a visit from Tottenham or Stoke. When Serge pulled out Stoke I knew Noel was going to Cardiff, and he did. Oh well a winnable game depending on how Cardiff City boss Dave Jones plays the game. Will he be resting players, Stoke will probably go down that route.

The Road to Wembley Nov 27

After Brighton saw off Woking in the first round which took a replay, extra time and penalties the reward was more non-league opposition.

Yesterday they welcome FC United of Manchester and club started by fans in protest to Malcolm Glazer's takeover of Manchester United they play in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.

The non-league club came away with another crack at the current league leader of Division One Brighton after earning a draw. The league club could have won this game but for the FC United keeper who made save after save to keep them out.

After taking the lead in the first half but mid way through the second half a red card saw the non-leaguers reduced to ten men. Brighton got themselves back into the game with a goal with only seven minutes of normal time left. Every Brighton must have thought the game was over when the ref pointed to the spot for a Brighton penalty, but the FC United keeper had other ideas and made a brilliantly injury-time save.

Hammers interested in Jones

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones is in the rumour mill with a suggestion at West Ham could be interested according to the Sunday People and a few other Sundays.

Bottom of the Premiership West Ham home yesterday against Wigan had the game labelled as ‘Save Our Season’ game, but even a 3-1 win will still keep the pressure on manager Avram Grant.

The West Ham board are rumoured to have put together a list of replacements for Grant with Dave Jones high on there list. City boss Jones was link with the London club before the sign Grant in the summer.

Three points drop at QPR

Defeat at QPR means Cardiff drop five points behind them but stay in second three points ahead of Swansea City.

Thanks to the internet I had a joy able afternoon watching the game live while watching live scores on the red button with the BBC. It fell like a television studio has I reacted to scores from around the leagues.

Cardiff had the first half sown-up in this top of the table clash and deserved to open the scoring. It was Captain Craig Bellamy who put the Welsh club into the lead. The home team equalised five minutes later to square the game again.

The second half was much of the same with Cardiff on top of the game but if you don’t score it means nothing. However it was to be QPR to take the lead for the first time in the game 12 minutes into the second half. Even after the goal Cardiff when on the hunt for a goal to level the games up again but two incidents were to upset the Cardiff bench and players.

Was the Jay Bothroyd incident a penalty! Yes, with out a doubt it was a pen and it was confirmed to me on see it in slow motion. They is nothing that can be done now, the referee can say sorry he miss it but we lost and miss out on a point or may three who knows.

Of course the managers had something to say on the matter, first City boss Dave Jones:
"How can the referee not see it? And if he doesn't see it, how can the linesman not see it?
"They're the big decisions that matter in tight games like this.
"Everybody in the stadium could see it was a penalty. The reaction of the QPR players tells you that. We feel hard done by.
"I went to see him (the referee) about it afterwards and he asked if I was questioning his integrity. I was questioning his decision.
"Referees have got to be better in games like this. Was the game too big for him? That's for the referee's assessor to decide."
The other incident mentioned by Jones was the Bellamy one a bit later and it wasn't a penalty in my book.

On the subject of the ref the QPR boss Neil Warnock:
"I thought the referee had a good game.
"What Dave's saying is deflecting from the result, and we deserved to win that match."
If the shoe was on the other foot you can just image his reaction.

Like the phoenix from the ashes

Peter Ridsdale is in talks with Plymouth Argyle about investing in the club and it looks to be official has a statement has been released on the clubs official website. >>> Statement <<<
In a media statement a Plymouth spokesman said:
"Peter has extensive experience in football.
"He is just one of a number of parties that we have undertaken exploratory discussions, with regard to potential future investment."
"If and when there is anything further to add we will do so at the appropriate time."
Over the last month or so he has been seen at a number of Plymouth games. That the time Plymouth’s executive director Keith Todd was quick to dismiss an involvement between the club and Ridsdale. Todd told the local press:
"He is down in the West Country on holiday and asked if he could come along to the game. "There is nothing more to it than that."
A rumour going round the internet is that Ridsdale is back by some Americans, maybe the same Americans who he lined up to invest in Cardiff. Surprisingly looking at the Plymouth messageboards where some fans would be happy for Ridsdale to be involved in their club. It is a case of anyone but the lot in charge at the moment.

Comminges off to Carlisle

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones has allowed defender Miguel Comminges to go out on loan to Carlisle Utd until Dec 31st.

Comminges was expected to be on the released list in the last summer but was given a short term contract of six months. He has been recovering from a long term injury and boss Jones thought it was fair to help the defender regain his fitness. His contract with the Bluebirds expires at the end of the season.

He joined Cardiff City in the summer of 2008 on a free from Swindon town on a two year contract. He made 12 starts in total with 20+ games off the bench he is also a Guadeloupe international.

The loan deal could turn into a permanent deal the Carlisle boss Greg Abbott told the club website:
"We need some defensive cover and Miguel will provide that,".
"He's a player that we know a lot about and we are delighted that he is coming to join us.
"He had a great time at Swindon and was progressing well at Cardiff, but his injury forced him out of the side.
"A lot of hard work has been done to get him back to match fitness and this move will give him a chance to get in and around our first team squad.
"He is strong, he's quick and he has an excellent reputation, so we're looking forward to working with him.
"If things go well, there may even be the option to take this further, but obviously we all want to this initial period to settle him in, and we'll see how it goes from there."
If the loan deal was to fail it is highly unlikely he will be seen in a Bluebirds shirt again and will go out on loan again until the end of the season.

Meanwhile over the border

The Welsh teams playing over the border in England are all doing well this early into the season.

In the Championship Cardiff City and Swansea City are second and third respectively in the battle to win promotion to the Premier League. There are only three points between the Welsh rivals going into this weekend games.

In the Blue Square Premier Newport County are in a play-off place looking to make it back into the Football League since they went bust in 1989. There last season in the Football League was 1987/88 after which they were relegated to the then  Conference only to go out of business in February 1989. Wrexham just outside the top five and are in there third season outside Football League looking along with Newport restoring league football.
Further down the non-league ladder Merthyr Town who rose from the death bed of Merthyr Tydfil are top of the Toolstation Western League - Division One. In North Wales Colwyn Bay are second in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, both clubs dreaming of reaching the Football League.

Swansea away live on the BBC

The BBC is doing the double and will be screening Cardiff City away trip to the Liberty Stadium live in February next year. The game has been moved to Sunday and kick-off 1:15pm.

The BBC cameras were at the Cardiff City stadium a few weeks ago to witness the Bluebirds defeat to the arch rivals from the West Swansea City. Bluebird fans will be hoping for a better result next time and that manager Dave Jones will wake-up to the importance of winning the derby game.

The game will be a ‘bubble’ for the Cardiff City fans the nor for this fixture these days.

Forest next

Forest kick-off 3pm
After the excitement of Bothroyd and England it is back to the bread and butter of every football fan, League Football.

City faces Nottingham Forest tomorrow and manager Dave Jones and his team will be looking to keep their place at the top of the league table with a win. City’s opponents are pushing to join the race at the top of the table, second place QPR are home to bottom club Preston. Forest’s away form is not the best, one win in eight which was  back in the of September. They have lost three and drawn four.

Ahead of tomorrow’s game there is only the fitness of Chris Burke who limped out of the Scunthorpe last Saturday is in doubt. He pulled out of the mid-week Scottish international but the rumour is he will be fit for tomorrow. There are also rumours that Darcy Blake and Lee Naylor are in doubt for the Forest game as both came off at varying stages of the Scunthorpe game.

Will Chopra rise to the call of India

It’s not the first time Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra has been linked with the India national football team, but over the last few day talks of such a move have heated up. He has Indian-born grandparents which is normal all you need, however to play for Indian he needs Indian passport, something he does not have.

Chopra has been out to Abu Dhabi to meet the India coach Englishman Bob Houghton and watch the national team play; they lost to Kuwait 9-1.

If Chopra was to decide to take up the offer it would bring up a club v country in January has India take part in the Asian Cup. The competition starts for India on the January 10 against Australia followed by Bahrain and South Korea with the final on the Jan 29th but it is highly unlikely they will progress further than the group stage so he should be on his way back to Cardiff on the Jan 18th.

It has been reported that Cardiff City and manager Dave Jones are happy for Chopra to play in the Asian Cup.

Sporting to BBC Sport Wales he said:
"It would help Cardiff City and boost Cardiff City because it would give them another avenue to promote the club.
"It's a case of meeting the government over there and trying to get... I'm not sure if it's citizenship or something else.
"I've spoken to the manager [Houghton] who's happy, hopefully we can get things sorted."
"When I first mentioned [the India chance] to [Cardiff manager] Dave Jones he was all for it.
"I'm not sure he knew things were going to go as far as they have... but the opportunity is too good to turn down.
"Whether there are ways round [missing the Cardiff fixtures] I don't know, that's the only problem.
"I don't want to miss games, I want to play in every game."

Bothroyd and England

Jay in training
Football tonight! not my normal fare international football let a lone a friendly. With no Welsh game tonight I will feel in a strange watching England, an English team I could well have an interest in.

England boss Fabio Capello picking Cardiff City and Championship top scorer Jay Bothroyd for the friendly tonight at Wembley against France interesting. It will be a first for Cardiff City fans who normally they line-up on the ‘anyone but’ England side of the border.

The last time I chanted England was way back 1975/76 with Mike England scored for Cardiff City in a game I can’t remember which game. I think it was his one and only goal in the one season with the Bluebirds. Allow that season the chant come be regular around Ninain Park. I don’t thing I will be giving them a chant tonight maybe a clap for Bothroyd, but watching with a bit of interest.

It’s not like the London Sports press are over the moon with the idea of someone 28-years-old getting his first international cap (maybe), and the fact he his a Championship player to boot. The pundits and ex-players brigade are up in arms,

One Tony Cascarino the ex-Republic of Ireland striker said:
“No offence to him but it’s a sad reflection on English forwards if a very good Championship player who’s never looked top-flight calibre can make the squad.”
The English fans are mostly the same, why and all that crap. The reason is simple, look to your managers and chairman who overlook local talent to shop aboard for players. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said Bothroyd was one that possible got away, but would he have made it if he had stayed. More than likely he would have been stuck in the reserves and moved on later.

Bothroyd chances of playing could have increased after Andy Carroll’s club Newcastle United are reported to have contacted the Football Association asking for the withdrawal of Carroll. The North East club are concerned over a groin injury and told the England management but the player he is up for the game, it’s now being reported that he will be having a late fitness test.

However at the end of the day it is done to English boss Capello and he said:
“My England scouts have been looking at Jay during Cardiff matches for some time.
“They told me he is a very good player and he is an interesting choice for us.
“We are not just looking at players from the Premier League, but also ones in the Championship, too. It will be interesting to see how Jay gets on.”
I expect Jay to feature somewhere in the game and if he gets enough time on the pitch to show his metal, he is after more than one cap because some players are out injured.

Today the Cardiff striker was linked with Chelsea of all clubs, the rumour comes out off the Daily Star who claim Carlo Ancelotti is interested in adding the striker to his squad. It just 44 days before Bothroyd and his agent can talk to other clubs because his contract runs out in the summer.

Wenger “He is one of my regrets, he left very early."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admitted he may have let Jay Bothroyd too early with news ex-Arsenal youngest getting a England call-up. The incident which lead to him leaving Arsenal happen went he threw his shirt at the bench after being substituted by Don Howe during the FA Premier Academy League play-off final against West Ham. The then head of youth development Liam Brady said:
"We will not tolerate this behaviour. He is not wanted at this club any more."
He left the London club for Coventry where he played a total of 83 games, scoring 17 goals over three seasons. Next to Italy and Perugia, and loan spell with Blackburn before joining Wolves then Charlton who allowed him to go to Stoke on loan.

He signed for Cardiff from Wolves on a relatively low fee of £350,000 for a striker.

Wenger said:
"He is one of my regrets, he left very early. But I have said many times it is important a guy has a good career, even if he goes somewhere else.
"It is better than to play in the reserves.
"He went down but has come back up again and we are all very proud of him at Arsenal.
"Sometimes it is only later they realise they not only have to have talent, but need to work as well.
"Sometimes to go down to the Championship, there is no better education.
"It is true, he had a little outcome that you can have when you are 16 or 17 but he is a good guy, and he is classy; left-footed, strong body, fantastic technique.
"The incident didn't happen in the first-team group, it happened in the youth team.
"Liam Brady is responsible for that. They made the decision and I didn't stand in the way because it was a disciplinary matter."

Fan arrested

According to the Daily Mail a Scunthorpe fan was arrested after an incident involving Cardiff striker Craig Bellamy.

The paper is reporting at a fan climbed on to the pitch as the Cardiff players was about to take a corner with some reports that a punch was thrown towards the player. Bellamy didn’t react to that incident but was then involved in a heated verbal confrontation with fans around the corner flag area.

Bellamy said:
'The man should not have been on the pitch. I wouldn't have said he threw a punch but it was a stupid situation, he should never have been there, and I was angry because the stewards didn't seem to do anything about it.'
Manager David Jones said on the incident:
'It could have been an ugly situation and Craig could have got himself into trouble because of it.

'It's not always easy to turn the other cheek when fans are hurling abuse at you and, whoever the culprit is, he should be banned for life. I thought he had thrown a punch, which is totally unacceptable, and the authorities have to take stern action to prevent incidents like this.

City still top and Bothroyd joins England

Cardiff City are back at the top of the league after a 4-2 win away at Scunthorpe with this morning leaders QPR only managing a draw at Nottingham Forest. Cardiff are top a point ahead of QRP and seven above third place Swansea City who play Middlesbrough tomorrow.

The two goals today from Jay Bothroyd must have helped his cause towards an England cap. He is now in the official England squad for the friendly against France. He has been in the English set as a youth and scored in his only under 21 game against Mexico U-21's with a spectacular overhead kick as England won 3–0. Hopefully he will make the match day squad, if he is on the bench going on past England friendly's there is a good chance of some playing time.

Bothroyd close to a England call-up

Some history could be made in a few days when the England boss Fabio Capello names his squad for the friendly at Wembley against France, because a Cardiff City player could be in line for a call.

After much newspaper talk Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd has been called into the preliminary squad as the England boss waits on the weekend games to see who withdraws through injury.

He will name the squad sometime on Sunday and the squad will then report for duty on Monday and if Bothroyd he will be the first City player to be called up by England.

“Jay is the England preliminary squad and we hope he will still be in there when it is trimmed down over the weekend,” said delighted Bluebirds boss Dave Jones, who pushed Bothroyd’s international case last month.

“For Jay to be called up for England is fantastic for him and everybody at Cardiff City, for all the people who have helped him and his team-mates.

“It would be a proud moment for everybody if he is in the main squad and gets onto the pitch.

“Jay’s goal tally is far better than it was last season but his performances have been on a par. He is finishing chances.”
It he was to don the red or white of England would that make much off a difference to the anyone but England brigade at Cardiff City.

The Road to Nowhere (The Welsh Cup) Goytre United

Goytre United 2-3 Carmarthen Town

It was Welsh Cup time last weekend blink and you would have missed it because  like the nor it didn’t set the football world alight. Goytre United lead my trail to Carmarthen for this Third Round Welsh Cup encounter.

Carmarthen Town run out 3-2 winners which was reported to have been entertaining game and victory means they are how facing GAP Connah's Quay at home in the Forth Round in January.

The FAW need to do someing to up the profile of the competition maybe allowing the teams playing in the English set-up back into the Cup would be a start. But would they be interested in joining just would the chance of European football be a draw.

Bothroyd and rumours

With a rumour that Cardiff City’s top scorer Jay Bothroyd has turned down a new contract offer or his stalling over a new offer the wheels of the rumour mill is starting to turn.

Bothroyd is linked with another Premier League team, Blackburn Rovers who can now join Fulham, Birmingham and Liverpool who are said to be waiting in the wings or having a look. Cardiff have a bit of a problem with Bothroyd, do they let his contract run out, hope City gain promotion which could keep him at City or sell him in January. With Ledley walking free last summer will they risk it with Bothroyd seeing another player with value walking away?

Cardiff are determined to keep the player with talks on going but come January the pressure to sell will be at its highest. If Bothroyh were to move on then hopefully there will a bit of an auction to help push up the finally fee. With Jones in the maket for some three or four new face and having to watch his back Talking on the subject manager Dave Jones said,
"We are in talks with Jay and his agent, but there is no agreement yet.
"I had a chat with Jay. We are in negotiations with Jay and his agent, but if he doesn't sign a new deal, then so be it.
"We would have to respect that, but we will try everything we can to make sure he does sign.
"You can never be fearful of losing players. As a manager you can lose them to injury or transfer. You have to be aware you could always lose a player."
It’s not just Bothroyd the club are in new contract talks with youngest Adam Matthews and Chris Burke, boss Jones said,
"It's the same situation with Chris Burke and Adam Matthews.

Cardiff team v Reading

Heaton

Naylor Hudson Blake Matthews

Whittingham McPhail Olofinjana Burke

Chopra Bothroyd

Substitutes Marshall, Rae, Koumas, Drinkwater, Wildig, 17 Keogh

Bothroyd is back and in the starting line-up no surprise there no Gyepes well surprise there. Burke, Matthews and Blake all starting and no Bellamy in the squad.

A return to winning ways is what is needed

I am glad there is a game today with Cardiff making the short trip along the M4 to Reading. I still have a bad taste in my mouth after that total surrender to Swansea on Sunday. I still can’t get my head around Dave Jones after match comment but it history now Reading and three points are the future.

In last nights game a draw at Portsmouth by top of the table QPR means a win for Cardiff will see them go back on top of the League.

The Cardiff boss will be making a few changes with Jay Bothroyd available after serving a one match suspension, which will mean loanee Andy Keogh back on the bench. I can’t see defender Gabor Gyepes starting after the manager put the blame on him for the Swansea goal. Burke/Drinkwater what will happen there a lot for boss Dave Jones to mull over.

The Road to Wembley - 6 Nov 2010

First round proper of the FA Cup this weekend and the trail has lead to Brighton who was taking on Woking my next link in the chain to the final in May.

Woking FC, have some pedigree in giant killing in the past seeing off West Bromwich Albion. Beat Brighton would not be the greatest of giant killing but a route to a possible gold mine of the third round. To reach this round they beat Eastleigh 3-2 for the joys of the seaside with a visit to Brighton.

By all reports the game was pity poor and it end after 90 minutes 0-0 meaning both were in today’s second round draw. Whoever wins the replay will face a home game against FC United of Manchester.

The FA Cup has thrown up a interesting fixture if AFC Wimbledon and MK Dons can win there replays a first ever meeting between the two clubs. Both clubs were born out of the old Wimbledon MK Dons known to fans around the country as Franchise F.C move out to Milton Keynes. The anti-move fans formed they own club AFC Wimbledon steadily climb-up the leagues to now just one promotion form the Football League.

Bad day in the office for Cardiff

Cardiff City 0-1 Swansea City

At the Cardiff City stadium today there was only one team in it and they won, Swansea City. Cardiff City were out managed as Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers mugged his counterpart at Cardiff City Dave Jones. On the pitch it was the same the Swansea players outplay Cardiff in every position only the arrival of Burke seemed to give the Bluebirds an edge.

The only player who gets any credit in my book was goalkeeper Tom Heaton with his saves the score line would have much greater. It must be said the atmosphere shit it picked up towards the end of the game, more out of desperation than anything else.

Game over, rematch some time next year a 1500+ Swansea fans going home with the bragging rights and three points.

Derby weekend

There are two local derbies at Cardiff City fans look forward to one is the Sevenside derby between Cardiff and Bristol City who a lot of fans regard as the real derby and this Sunday it's time for the Welsh Derby with Swansea City are rivals from along the M4.

The Sevenside derby at the Cardiff City stadium as been and went, it was defeat for the visitors, 3-2 on at day after going two nil down in the first eight minutes. So now it’s the turn of the Welsh Derby on Sunday with the visit of Swansea.

It will be a full house at the stadium creating an atmosphere of intensity that transforms into a battle of expectations with can stay with you for a life time, they are like battle honour. Cardiff fans of an age still talk of the John Buchanan at tied the game 3-3 back it 1980. (See video clip below)

Both managers agree ahead of the game that they would treat the game has the same as any other say in an interview with Sports Wales TV show. Cardiff boss Dave Jones saying,
"It's the same preparation as for any other game.
"You look at the team you are playing against, try to nullify their strengths and play to your own.
"As a player I never enjoyed derbies, they're so intense and you don't want to make a mistake… derbies are always tough, always difficult.
"But everyone wants to play, you can see in training that the tempo is up, everyone's enjoying the time.
"Whatever team I pick they'll all go out and do their best. We will hopefully have a fantastic game of football and come up with the points."
While Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers said,
"Both teams have started the season very, very well, that's great for south Wales and it puts that bit more on the game," said.
"But it's not a game that's going to define where we are at the end of the season.
"[The derby is] fantastic for the fans, but as a team and manager you have to prepare just like any other game."
See full interview on Sport Wales 7pm BBC2 Wales

Both sets of fans are up for it but defeat on Sunday would mean nothing to either set of fans if Promotion was the outcome of the season. However winning the lot would be nice and greedy. It was all square between both clubs last season both having victories at home. This Derby must be the only one that has never seen an out right winner has neither side has ever completed a league double over the other.

I feel ok about the game Sunday with Swansea City because of Craig Bellamy, why! Because you know there will be passion in the dressing room. He has played in some of the biggest derbies in the UK, the 'Old Firm' in Scotland between Celtic and Rangers and over the border in England both the Manchester and Merseyside derbies and a few others to boot. This will be his first Welsh taste of the Wales derby on the pitch that is.

The are bragging rights up for grabs so fans from both clubs want the win with Cardiff looking to extened there lead at the top of the table. If QPR beat Reading on tomorrow they will go back top of the league until the outcome of the Welsh derby.

Bothroyd attracts another rumour

Awhile back Liverpool and Fulham were linked with Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd now the ‘Rumour Mill’ has spat out another name today. Reports suggest at Birmingham are contemplating a move for the striker in the January transfers window. It’s not the first time Birmingham has been linked with the Midlands club by the press.

They smell a bargain, but will they get a bargain? With Bothroyd out of contract in the summer and could walk away for free. Come January Bothroyd or his agent on his behalf under Football League rules to talk to other clubs bringing temptation.

However, in January if the Bluebirds are still top of the league table or there and about with boss Dave Jones in the transfer market it could well keep the striker at the club.

Speaking back in August at the start of the season to the Sunday Mirror about his contract he was reported has saying,
“I haven’t spoken to the club about it and once the season starts I don’t want to talk about contracts.
“I want to concentrate on my football – that’s what I’ve always believed in.
“I don’t mind talking about it out of season but once the season beings I want to stay 100 per cent focused on my football.
“I don’t feel unsettled, I’m confident in my own ability.
“I’m not looking ahead to the end of the season or anything like that.
“I want to play at the highest level – as soon as possible – and I’d love to get there with Cardiff.
“I love the city, the club, the fans and I still we can go on and win promotion."
Cardiff City boss Dave Jones and Cardiff City would not want to see another player walk away for free having lost out on millions when Joe Ledley moved to Celtic after his contract run out. On Bothroyd Jones said:
“If Jay wants to wait we will have a decision to make in January if an offer comes in.
“It would be a case of should we sell him or run it through to the end of the season and see what happens?”
Like most player he wants Premier League football and has said he with be happy if it was with Cardiff City.
