The Welsh Cup kick-off yesterday with the opening games in the Qualifying Round One getting underway. I decided a few weeks ago to track Fleur de Lys Welfare mainly because of the name I remembered it from childhood associated with a rugby club then.
The game was supposed to be played a Fleur de Lys Welfare ground at Islwyn Park but was switched due to cricket at Fleur de Lys ground the cricket outfield shares some of their football pitch. The game kick-off early, at midday because Talgarth reserves had a scheduled game the same afternoon.
So the game was switched to opponents Talgarth Town ground but that didn’t give them an advantage as Fleur de Lys Welfare who went in that half-time 1-0 up, eventually ran-out 5-0 winners the crowd was estimated at under 70.
In the next round they will face a trip to RTB Ebbw Vale FC who were taken to extra-time and penalties before finally winning the day at Penrhiwceiber Constitutional Athletic FC.
A footnote, I have been asked why I call the Welsh Cup the ‘Road to Nowhere’ because no one outside the clubs completing, no one really cares. Even when Cardiff City played in the Welsh Cup the games involving them were poorly supported.
