Dennehy signs for Barnet.

Ex-Cardiff City defender Darren Dennehy has signed for Barnet last night. The Republic of Ireland under 21 international negotiated a release from Cardiff City and is now a free agent looked to be heading for Division 2 rivals Gillingham.

The defender joined the Bluebirds two seasons ago from Everton after turning down a new one-year contract with the Merseyside club. He joined City on a three year-contract in search for first team football. However, he never had a chance to play any first team football with the Bluebirds and was loaned out.

Cardiff boss Dave Jones loaned him out twice to Hereford they were interest in a permanent deal but it came to nothing. His next loan deal was to Kent to play for Gillingham where he ended last season by the change of manager at Gillingham did not damped their interest in signing him. With news he had negotiated a release Barnet jump in quickly.

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler was not happy and said:

“We’re disappointed a bit at his representative as the (Gillingham) chairman had sorted things out.

“We thought we had done the deal but at the last minute he changed his mind.

“That’s football and we understand because he worked for Mark last year.”
Dennehy decided to follow his old boss at Gillingham Mark Stimson who is the new boss at Barnet.

Stimson told the official Barnet website,
“I am delighted to capture the signature of Darren on a permanent basis. I really enjoyed working with him before and his commiting to Barnet shows he likes the way I work."
