Is cash strapped Cardiff City struggling to hold on to a number of there star players like Peter Whittingham. Cardiff will hope to negotiate new contracts with the likes of key players Jay Bothroyd, Stephen McPhail and Kevin McNaughton and Peter Whittingham, or else see them depart as free agents at the end of next season.
An unnamed spokesman (agent) is talking of the Joe Ledley scenario happening again next season with Whittingham. In today’s South Wales Echo there is a report the club have put an offer to the midfielder which is on the table. With this story it looks to be staying on the table has more negotiation take place.
It is the last thing Cardiff fans need more speculation through the season about contracts and players walking away for free. In the case of Whittingham, Cardiff has had an offer over £2million from Nottingham Forest to sign him but they have been knocked back.
The club would not like to lose out again after the Ledley deal and again the club are over a barrel has the price is like to go down went the transfer window closes at the end of August. With a year left clubs tend to wait and put in a crazy offer come the January transfer window, Whittingham can talk to clubs in that period if he is still out of contract to line up a deal himself.
With the clubs present financial situation there will have to be some pretty intensive negotiation and the big worry to fans is the lack of a football present at the top of the club. The new Chief Executive Gethin Jenkins comes from a Rugby background having occupied the same position with Newport rugby club.
The spokesman for Whittingham’s agents, Key Sports Management said,
“There is an offer on the table from Cardiff City and it is being looked at.
“The financial situation Cardiff find themselves in is a concern, naturally.
“Like any player, Peter is very ambitious. With Cardiff unable to bring any new players in because of the embargo, you do start to question things.
“We also know that being unable to bring in new players, Cardiff are not keen on selling any of the players they currently have.
“Peter enjoyed his best season last year with Cardiff and he has options. We do not feel there is any need to rush things.
“Of course, in January he would be free to talk to other clubs, but that is not to say he won’t be committing himself to Cardiff. Peter is happy at Cardiff. He is focused on the start of the new season.”
All this talk of what is going on off the field on if expect for the lost Ledley the Cardiff squad is all but the same as last season. Surely they will be pushing for a top six finish or possible better, third time luckily and all that. Where the team fall short is in cover for certain key players, Bothroyd comes to mine has one of the most important ones. Boss Jones need that transfer embargo lifted has soon as possible.
