Can you spot a possible transfer target sitting at home while watching the World Cup? Well if the Wales on Sunday is right Dave Jones can and he is reported as saying,
“There are two or three players from Africa I would love to sign.
“There are two or three I’d love to take from some of the African countries, but while I am watching them so is everybody else,”
He has signed African players before with previous team he had managed and there are high profile African players throughout the major leagues around the world. Africa is fast becoming the new Brazil/South America in the search for new talent with football massive there. If Dave Jones can winkle out some new talent all the better of Cardiff but won’t be won’t find it easy with agents and others having the same idea.
Until the embargo is lifted no one will be coming anyway but if he does do any shopping in African he will have to do a lot of homework.
The most famous African to have player for Cardiff City must be former striker Rob Earnshaw who was born in Zambia. He was a prolific goal scorer in a Cardiff top and holds the record for the most goals in one season. Another player from the African continent who played for the City was South African Steve Mokone, the first black player to for Cardiff City? He only played three league games and scored on his debut the opening game of 1959/60 season, a 3-2 win over Liverpool at Ninian Park. He joined from Dutch side Heracles helping them to promotion but it was ankle problems that beset him while at Cardiff. He also played two Welsh Cup game’s scoring a goal at Bangor City. He up sticks to join Barcelona after one season at Cardiff.
Were these the only two African born in players who played for Cardiff? I am not sure. Cohen Griffiths was the only player to have played for the Welsh club who came from South America, he was born Georgetown, Guyana.
