Remember Cardiff City defender Rhys Weston joined the Bluebirds from Arsenal in November 2000 for £300,000 and went on to 182 games scoring twice. While with the Bluebirds the then Chairman Sam Hammam asked him and a number of other players to take a paid cut which he dually did.
The paid cut paved the way for Darren Purse to sign for the then Ninian Park club but the defender soon found he was targeted by a small section of fans and was later released and joined Norwegian Viking F.K where on this debut he was injured and that was it. He later joined Port Vale on trial before joining them until the end of the season. In the summer of 2007 he joined Walsall where he still players.
The reason for remembering Weston today was because in the League Paper he is tell his favourite XI in ‘Dream Team’
Goalkeeper – Keiren Westwood (Coventry)
Right Back – Lee Dixon (Retired)
Centre Back – Danny Gabbidon (West Ham) I’m having the old Cardiff partnership at centre back because they had a great understanding. Danny has been so unlucky with injuries but he is a quality player and would combine well with James.
Centre Back – James Collins (Aston Villa) I was fortunate enough to play with both my centre backs at Cardiff and James was a quality player. Just moved on to Villa and I am sure he will do well there.
Left Back – Ashley Cole (Chelsea)
Right Midfield –Simon Davies (Fulham)
Centre Midfield – Patrick Vieira (Inter Milan)
Centre Midfield – Joe Ledley (Cardiff City) I saw Joe come through the youth team at Cardiff and he is a great player. He has worked very hard and has a bright future ahead of him but my claim to fame is that I always beat him at two-touch.
Left Midfield – Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
Striker – Thierry Henry (Barcelona)
Striker – Alan Shearer (Retired)
